Romance Auxiliary Verbs: Status - Development - Variation

Project Abstract

This project seeks to deliver a coherent analysis of the status, the development and the variation of auxiliary constructions, focusing on Romance languages and varieties. The central issue is how auxiliaries and the features related to them are represented in the lexicon, where and why auxiliary constructions vary syntactically and morphologically, and how they have developed. This analysis of verbal auxiliariness is tightly connected to functional categories and their feature composition. It will be carried out in the framework of Generative Grammar, which satisfies descriptive as well as explanatory adequacy.
