Abstract: This paper accounts for subject-object inversion in Chinese
resultative compounds within the lexical mapping theory.  The inversion
is attributed to the competition for syntactic assignment between the
two composing roles in a composite role.  This account is extended to
the subject-object inversion in verbs of consumption with an
agent-domain composite role.
