Abstract: We examine Hungarian complex predicates consisting of of a syntactically separable preverb bearing person/number marking and a verbal stem. We suggest that the person/number marking is best interpreted as an oblique pronominal satisfying the argument requirements of the complex predicate composed of the preverb and verb stem. Such data provide evidence for the assumption that predicates expressed by several syntactically independent elements are better analyzed as associated with lexical representations than as composed in constituent structure.
