• LFG98 PROGRAM: LFG98 is upon us! The conference will be held at Emmanuel College, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, June 30 - July 2, 1998. The program and further information is included below. The conference organisers would prefer you to preregister, so if you are coming and haven't already done so, please go to the Conference Web Site and do the necessary.
• ILFGA BUSINESS MEETING: As part of LFG98 at Brisbane, there will be a business meeting. All ILFGA members (that's the international LFG association for those of you who've forgotten) are welcome.

  Some of the topics to be discussed are:

  1. report on the formation of ILFGA, including a statement from our secretary/treasurer, Tracy King
  2. site of LFG00 (or LFG2000 ?)
  3. Abstract submission for further LFG conferences: full papers vs. short abstracts?

  The business meeting will take place on Wednesday, July 1 in the evening.

  4. LFG99 will be held at the University of Manchester, Manchester, England, July 19-21, 1999. Details will be provided at a later date. Local contacts/organizers are Nigel Vincent and Kersti Borjars

  More Websites

  There is a new web site at: http://www-lfg.stanford.edu/lfg/ This site is intended to supplement the site already maintained by Doug Arnold at Essex (http://clwww.essex.ac.uk/LFG/). The web site contains the ILFGA home page, an archive of papers and information on some current research directions in LFG. The launch of this web site was possible mainly due to support from Xerox PARC and a huge amount of initial time and effort put in by Joan Bresnan. In future, it will be maintained by group effort and several people (such as Mary Dalrymple) have already contributed immensely. Check it out!

  Proceedings News

  Proceedings of the LFG97 Conference (CSLI on-line Publications) now have ISSN 1098-6782. They are available at: http://www-csli.stanford.edu/publications/ Choose: Proceedings ON-LINE (The proceedings of LFG96 are also available here; proceedings of LFG98 will be available in the early fall.) A hard-copy booklet of early-bird submissions to LFG98 will also be made available at the LFG98 conference in Brisbane itself. This extra service is entirely thanks to Chris Mannning's efforts.

  ESSLI-98 Summer School

  This year's ESSLI will be held in Saarbruecken, Germany from August 17-28, 1998 (http://www.dcs.warwick.ac.uk/~esslli98/). Of interest for the LFG-community in particular will be a course held by Joan Bresnan and Louisa Sadler on `Modelling Dynamic Interactions between Morphology and Syntax' to be held during the second week (week2). Course Abstract: Morphology appears to interact with syntax dynamically. Typologically, richer morphology is associated with weaker syntactic word order restrictions and reduction of hierarchical syntactic structure (witness the nonconfigurationality of Australian languages). Under historical language change, syntactic constituents often cross the syntax-morphology boundary to become morphologically bound, while preserving their interactions with other syntactic constituents (as in cliticization). Synchronically, words may preempt or block syntactic phrases, and conversely. Most contemporary lexicalist theories of syntax encapsulate word structure and phrase structure to such an extent that explaining these dynamic interactions is difficult. However, the architecture of LFG is distinctive in postulating a strict separation of morphology from syntax ONLY in the structural domain, while allowing both words and hierarchical phrases to have functions of the same types (represented by complex feature structures). This provides a useful formal tool for investigating dynamic linguistic interactions between morphology and syntax within a well-defined feature-logic based theory.
